UK pop starlet Alice Chater shared billing with Iggy Azalea on "Lola" last year, while launching two solo releases of her own -- "Thief" and "Tonight". For her first release of 2020, the artist sheds light on a relationship at its breaking point.
Without her trademark, infectious pop beats, Chater slows things down on mid-tempo ballad "Two Of Us". Love is still shared between the two parties, however, the artist has come to a realization that the toxic relationship they've now created is not healthy for either. In one last attempt to preserve the bond, Chater reminisces on the good times, wondering if things will ever be the same.
Before the "rock star" status, before the money and tour bus, there was only love. While that might have been enough then, it certainly can't fix all now. Love means more than affection, it is about realizing you could be the cause of your partner's pain. If the relationship cannot survive the hard times, best to call it quits for good.
"Nobody told me you could get lonely sleeping with the one you love, I know you love me, yes, you really love me, sometimes it ain’t enough," Chater somberly sings on the hook.
"Two Of Us" is a vast, emotional departure for Chater. While her previous releases have always been confident numbers, she appears to have lost her energy here. She may have looked over the problems before, but there's no more pretending all is perfect. Breaking up is always a difficult, heart-wrenching decision to make. It's no easier for Chater.
With exceptional vocals at the forefront yet again, producers Lewis Allen and MakeYouKnowLove (Zayn, Mabel) put more more emphasis on Chater's abilities by pairing the melancholy with delicate strings and piano keys.
While news of Chater's official debut album has been scarce, "Two Of Us" at least proves the artist is no one-trick pony.
